Five Little Monkeys Quiet Book

I have recently developed interest in making quiet book pages for baby. It looks fun and I can customise the pages according to her liking. I began by making the Itsy Bitsy Spider page and now I have completed the Five Little Monkeys page.

Five Little Monkeys

I downloaded the printable templates from a blog named Imagine Our Life. The blog is written by Stephanie who is a graphic designer, crafter and montessori homeschooling mommy. Her blog has many quiet book tutorials and printable templates. I really admire her hard work and creativity.

Last month, I ordered the craft materials from EZbuy at a very attractive price. I bought various colors 1m felt cloth, 99 pieces of pre-cut 30cm x 30cm felt cloth (multi-color), buttons, velcro, fillers, and fabric.

After cutting out the templates, I traced them on the felt and cut out the pieces. All the small pieces were hand-sew because mum’s sewing machine is kept too deep in the storeroom and she is reluctant to get it out for me. For the big pieces, I used glue gun to stick them to the background felt. Personally, I prefer to sew all the parts because it gives a more 3D effect. But without the sewing machine, it would take ages for me to complete 1 page. So all hail the glue gun~

Unlike Stephanie’s guide, I added velcro for the Mama Monkey and Doctor Monkey. Baby is too young to use clip buttons so velcro makes it easier for her to stick the monkeys. These yellow velcro which I got from EZbuy came with adhesive and I reinforce it with glue.

Notice the 5 little monkeys are individual pieces with no velcro attached. As I sing the song, baby will take 1 monkey to jump on the bed and then drop it on the floor until there is no little monkey left on the bed.

There is matching numbers on the little monkeys and their pillows. I would use it to teach baby numbers and asked her to match the numbers. Baby is 17 month old and she can recite 1 – 10 in English and Chinese with help for number 3 and 7 as she could not pronounce these two numbers yet.

Each monkey is filled with fillers so they are not so flat-looking.

In total, I took 4-5 nights (~3 hours each) to complete this page. I had to wait till baby is asleep before I can work on my project.

Mummy Monkey

Notice the phone which the Mama Monkey is holding? It coincidentally looks like iPhone X. LOL~
Anyway, it has a “picture” of the Doctor Monkey in white scrub because Mama Monkey is calling the doctor.

Doctor Monkey

And for the Doctor Monkey, he is holding the phone with Mama Monkey’s picture. When baby plays with the Mama and Doctor Monkeys, she would put them on her ear to pretend to make a call using their “phones”.

Overall, baby adores this quiet book page because she loves the song. She would not allow me to keep it away even when it’s her bedtime. Now I am even more motivated to make more pages for her to play and eventually bind it into a book.

Five Little Monkeys Lyrics

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

Four little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

Three little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

Two little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

One little monkey jumping on the bed
He fell off and bumped his head
So Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed!

No little monkeys jumping on the bed
None fell off and bumped his head
So Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
Put those monkeys back in bed!

Acrylic Painting

My bro took up oil painting class in his uni recently. His 2 “artistic” paintings inspired me to try it out too. Instead of oil painting, I went for the acrylic paint. And since SK is born with a less developed right brain, creativity is never in my blood. To avoid disappointment, I bought a Painting by Numbers kit. It’s kinda a beginner thingy. All I have to do is paint the canvas according to the pre-printed design with the colors numbered.

There are many shops selling this kind of painting by numbers kit, but most of them are over-priced. I bought mine from Qoo10 at only $17+ with delivery. The kit comes with the acrylic paints, brushes, 50cm by 40cm canvas, gloss paint, and hooks.

I started painting in Nov last year. It wasn’t the paint day and night kinda process. I merely spent a couple of hours at night on weekdays, and 3-4 hours on weekends. The painting process was really enjoyable because it can ease my nerves and clear my thoughts. All I have to do is just to focus on not painting out of line; exactly like the kindergarten kids learning how to color. The acrylic paint is odorless and mess-free.

By right I should start off with the light colors, then the darker tones and lastly, the black. But I painted the colors by the number sequence.

As the amount acrylic paint is quite limited, it is advisable not to be too generous at the initial stage. For my case, I have enough to finish the artwork and some leftovers for touching up.
Also, do remember to cover the paint container tightly when not in use, otherwise, the paint will dry up.

I was very careful when I do the painting. This is to ensure that my hands don’t touch the wet paint and cause it to smudge.

So after 1 month’s hard work, here’s the completed piece:

Not too bad, isn’t it?
=)

I have managed to persuade my mum to hang this painting in the living room.
And visitors are obliged to compliment it. =P

Tortellini with Bacon in Cream Sauce

I have not been blogging recipes for a long long time. Well, my enthusiasm for bento making had die down, which is why there isn’t any more bento post. I am still cooking occasionally but just not packing it into lunch box.

Anyway, this is the recipe for home cooked Tortellini~

Tortellini

Ingredients:
– 250 gm of fresh Tortellini
– 100ml of whipping cream
– 3 pieces of streaky bacon (diced/sliced into tiny stripes)
– 2 cloves of garlic (chopped) (feel free to add more)
– Olive oil
– Cheese (I used Gruyère cheese)
– Dried Parsley

Method:
1) In a pan, heat up some olive oil and add in the bacon. Let the bacon cook until it starts turning brown and crispy.
2) Meanwhile, cook the Tortellini in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
3) Add garlic into the pan and stir fry until fragrant.
4) Once the garlic is fragrant (avoid burning the garlic), add in the drained Tortellini and stir fry for 30 seconds.
5) Next, add in the whipping cream. I use whipping cream instead of cooking cream because it has higher fat content and makes the sauce more creamy. Feel free to opt for the healthier option.
6) When the sauce starts boiling, add some salt to taste. Just before you off the heat, shave the cheese in and mix well before serving.
7) Sprinkle some dried parsley over the pasta and tuck in!

Trust me, the pasta tastes awesome! The sauce gets really creamy when the cheese melts.
